You're Not Imagining It: Menopause, Work and the Support That Isn't Reaching You

You've lost the word halfway through a sentence in a meeting. You've felt the heat rise up your neck while everyone else seems perfectly comfortable. You've driven home wondering where the sharp, capable woman you know so well has gone.

She hasn't gone anywhere. She's in the middle of one of the biggest transitions of her life, often while holding down a job, a home, a family and everyone else's needs too.

And here's the part that stings: your workplace may genuinely believe it's supporting you.

The gap between the policy and the person

A recent piece in HR Magazine shared new research that put words to something so many of us already feel. Nearly every HR leader surveyed believed their organisation was meeting the needs of women going through menopause. Yet many of the women themselves didn't even know a policy existed.

That's not a story about uncaring employers. It's a story about distance: between the boardroom and the desk, between a document on the intranet and a woman quietly reducing her hours because she doesn't know what else to do.

When support doesn't reach us, we tend to assume the problem is us. That we should cope better, push harder, say nothing. At Branch Forward, we believe the opposite. The problem is the gap, and gaps can be closed.

Midlife isn't a falling away. It's a branching out.

So much of the conversation about menopause at work is framed around loss: lost focus, lost days, lost talent. We understand why. But it isn't the whole truth.

The women we work with bring decades of skill, judgement and resilience to their workplaces. Midlife can be the moment you finally get clear on what you need, what you'll no longer tolerate, and where you want to grow next. Think of it as a new branch rather than a closing chapter.

That growth is far easier with the right support around you. Some of it should come from your employer. Some of it you can start building for yourself, today.

Moving forward, one branch at a time

Our BRANCH Method™ was designed for exactly these moments. Here's how it can help you navigate menopause at work.

B: Build awareness. Start noticing what's really happening. A simple journal of symptoms, energy and triggers turns a fog of "I'm not myself" into patterns you can name and talk about.

R: Recognise your strengths. Before you walk into any conversation, remind yourself what you bring. You are not asking for a favour. You are asking for the conditions to keep doing excellent work.

A: Access resources. Find out what your workplace already offers: wellbeing schemes, flexible working, occupational health. Speak to your GP or pharmacist too. Support often exists; it's just not signposted.

N: Nourish your wellbeing. Sleep, food, movement, rest and connection all play their part. Small, kind habits add up, especially on the hard days.

C: Create a plan. Decide what would genuinely help, whether that's a later start after a broken night, a cooler spot to work or a quiet check-in, and go in with a clear ask.

H: Help forward. When you find your voice, you make it easier for the woman beside you to find hers. Share what worked. Every honest conversation narrows the gap a little more.

A note for the employers and HR teams reading this

If you've built a menopause policy, thank you. It matters. Now ask the women in your organisation whether they know it's there, and whether they'd feel safe using it.

Real support is visible, talked about openly, and shaped by the women it's meant for. It lives in a manager who knows how to listen, in adjustments offered without a fight, and in a culture where no one has to choose between her health and work she loves.

You don't have to navigate this alone

Branch Forward exists to walk alongside women aged 35 to 60 through perimenopause, menopause and the whole of midlife, helping you understand what's happening, find what helps and step forward with confidence.

If you're not sure where to begin, start with our free Branch Forward Starter Guide. It's a gentle first step towards understanding your symptoms and building a plan that works for your life, at work and beyond.

And if this resonated, pass it on, to a friend, a colleague or your HR team. That's how we help each other forward.
