HEALTHY EATING

Healthy Eating

Real Recipes for Real Weeks

Second Bloom Kitchen turns nutrition guidance into meals you'll actually want to cook.

Eating well during midlife shouldn't feel like another responsibility on an already busy day. Between work, family, changing energy levels and everything else life brings, preparing nutritious meals can sometimes feel overwhelming.

At Branch Forward, we believe healthy eating should be practical, enjoyable and accessible. You don't need expensive ingredients, restrictive diets or hours in the kitchen to nourish your body.

That's why we created Second Bloom Kitchen — a welcoming space where evidence-informed nutrition meets everyday cooking, helping women turn healthy eating advice into simple, satisfying meals.

Because your Second Bloom deserves food that nourishes your body and brings joy to your table.

Why Healthy Eating Matters During Midlife

As we move through perimenopause, menopause and beyond, hormonal changes can affect bone health, body composition and cardiovascular health. Our nutritional needs also evolve as we age.

While no single food can balance hormones or eliminate menopause symptoms, a varied, balanced diet can help support overall health and wellbeing.

Here are some areas worth focusing on:

  • Bone health: Calcium-rich foods, vitamin D and adequate protein help maintain healthy bones as oestrogen levels decline.

  • Muscle strength: Protein-rich foods, alongside regular strength-building activity, help preserve muscle mass.

  • Heart health: Wholegrains, vegetables, fruit, beans and unsaturated fats support cardiovascular wellbeing.

  • Everyday energy: Balanced meals provide the nutrients your body needs to function throughout the day.

  • Digestive health: Fibre-rich foods and adequate hydration help support healthy digestion.

The goal isn't to eat perfectly. It's to build an approach to food that supports your health, fits your budget and works with your lifestyle.

From the Second Bloom Kitchen

Caribbean-Inspired Salmon & Sweet Potato Power Bowl

A colourful, satisfying meal bringing together Caribbean-inspired flavours, nourishing ingredients and everyday simplicity.

This recipe combines omega-3-rich salmon, fibre-containing sweet potato, fresh vegetables and a refreshing lime dressing. It's ideal for lunch, dinner or meal preparation.

Serves: 2
Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes
Total time: Approximately 40 minutes

Ingredients

For the bowl

  • 2 salmon fillets (approximately 120–150g each)

  • 1 medium sweet potato (approximately 300g), diced

  • 100g cooked black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 2 handfuls of fresh spinach

  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced

  • ½ avocado, sliced

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

  • 1 small garlic clove, crushed

  • Black pepper to taste

For the lime dressing

  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yoghurt

  • Juice of ½ lime

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon water, to loosen if needed

Method

Step 1 — Roast the sweet potato

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan). Toss the diced sweet potato with half the olive oil, smoked paprika and a little black pepper. Spread on a baking tray and roast for approximately 25 minutes, turning halfway through, until tender.

Step 2 — Prepare the salmon

Mix the remaining olive oil with the allspice, thyme and garlic. Rub over the salmon fillets.

Place the salmon on a separate lined baking tray and bake for approximately 12–15 minutes, depending on thickness, until cooked through and the thickest part reaches 63°C.

Step 3 — Prepare the vegetables

Rinse and drain the black beans. Wash the spinach, slice the pepper and prepare the avocado.

Step 4 — Make the dressing

Whisk together the Greek yoghurt, lime juice, olive oil and optional honey. Add a little water until the dressing reaches your preferred consistency.

Step 5 — Build your bowl

Divide the spinach, roasted sweet potato, black beans and sliced pepper between two bowls. Add the cooked salmon and avocado, then drizzle with the lime dressing.

Serve immediately and enjoy.

Why We Love This Recipe

Salmon: Provides protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to a heart-healthy eating pattern.

Sweet potato: Supplies fibre and beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A.

Black beans: Add plant protein and fibre, helping make the meal more satisfying.

Spinach and peppers: Contribute vitamins, minerals and variety to your daily vegetable intake.

Greek yoghurt: Adds protein and calcium, important nutrients for maintaining muscle and bone health.

Make It Work for Your Week

  • Budget-friendly: Replace salmon with canned salmon, sardines or another suitable protein.

  • Plant-powered: Swap the salmon for baked tofu and use an unsweetened fortified plant-based yoghurt for the dressing.

  • Meal prep: Roast extra sweet potato and prepare the beans and vegetables ahead of time. Refrigerate cooked ingredients promptly and use within 48 hours, reheating thoroughly where appropriate.

  • Family-friendly: Serve the ingredients separately so everyone can build their own bowl.

Small Steps Towards Healthier Eating

Healthy eating doesn't have to begin with a complete kitchen makeover.

Start with one manageable change: add an extra vegetable to dinner, include protein at breakfast, prepare a nourishing lunch ahead of time or try one new recipe each week.

Over time, these small choices can become sustainable habits that support your wellbeing through menopause and beyond.
